A safari holiday is a must do and should be on everyone’s bucket list. Sure, they can be expensive but as we’ve discussed before, there are ways of making travel affordable and the memories are priceless. Here are seven things that you absolutely must try when embarking on a safari holiday.

Make sure you see The Big Five

The Big Five consists of lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and cape buffalo, and are so called because back in Africa’s colonial period, they were the hardest to catch and most desired by hunters. Now, however the only shooting allowed is by your camera and these are the five animals that most tourists are desperate to see when they are on safari.

Witness some part of the Wildebeest Migration

Every year, an incredible 1 million+ wildebeest and thousands of other animals, such as zebra and gazelle, migrate from Serengeti National Park to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. If you are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, you can see a stage of this happening and it’s incredibly powerful. It is likely to be the most amount of animals you will ever see in the wild in one place.

Experience a luxury safari camp

If you want a luxury safari experience, these do exist and they are incredible. Your ‘tent’ will be nicer than a lot of hotels you’ve stayed at, and staff and guides will be on hand to help with anything you want or need. If you are in Tanzania, you might be lucky enough to have a Maasai Warrior as your guide, offering your expert knowledge, and you will be treated to cocktails and three incredible chef-cooked meals a day!

Take photographs

There is a fine balance between being fully present and documenting your adventure, but there may be some things that deserve to be photographed. Sometimes, you could be too far away from an animal to get a good picture, in which case, enjoy the moment, however if you are a budding photographer with a good lens, there will be so many opportunities for a once-in-a-lifetime shot!

The view from above

There are so many different ways to see the views, but by hot air balloon at sunrise might be the best! There are plenty of options for hot air balloon flights in Africa that will totally take your breath away. You will have an aerial view of the landscape as well as any animals going about their morning routines. Finish it off with a champagne breakfast for the perfect safari morning.

Go birdwatching

Birdwatching on safari is very different to birdwatching anywhere else. Even if you don’t think of yourself as being very interested in birds, the ones in in places like Tanzania are so colourful and incredible that you will find yourself watching the skies, hoping to see more! These will be unlike any birds you have seen before.

Visit a tribe

While you are on a safari, why not see if you can also visit a local tribe. The people are usually very welcoming, as long as you are respectful and, if you are particularly lucky, they may perform a traditional dance for you! You can learn so much from speaking to people from other cultures and so while you are close by, it is worth a visit.

There is so much to see and do on a safari, it really is an incredible experience. Let me know in the comments if you’ve enjoyed a safari holiday and if there is anything I missed!
