Encourage Them To Drink Plenty
It is really important that your dog drinks plenty of water while they are ill. They will need to keep their fluid levels topped up as much as possible so that they do not dehydrate. That will only end up adding to their symptoms and make them even more uncomfortable. Plus, the body will need as much water right now to help aid the immune system and help it fight off any infections and bacteria. You might find that your pup is more willing to drink more if you move their water bowl closer to their bed while they are ill.
Get Their Bed Just Right
Anything that you can do to make their bed even more comfortable than usual will be a big bonus for your dog. That might just mean adding a blanket or an extra cushion for them to rest on. It might also be worth adding a cooling pad if your dog as a temperature. You can often buy these from pet shops. You cool the pad down by placing it in the fridge or the freezer and then placing it in the bed. The dog can then lie on it to stay cool.
Cut Down On Snacks
It’s a good idea to cut down on your dog’s usual treats and snacks while they aren’t feeling too good. Some of these treats can often contain high levels of fat and sugar, which won’t do your dog any good while it is ill. Some of their treats might even upset their stomach. So, stick to their usual meals but try and curb all other snacks at any other times.
Use Some Over-The-Counter Medication
You should be able to find some over-the-counter medications, such as colloidal silver for dogs from most pet stores. If your local shop doesn’t sell these kinds of medicines, you should be able to find sites online that sell them. It might even be worth shopping for these online even if your local pet store does sell them, as most online outlets will usually sell them for a reduced price.
Keep On Exercising Them
When we are ill, we just want to stay curled up on the sofa and move as little as possible. Your dog will have these same feelings, but it is still important that you continue to exercise them. Of course, you shouldn’t take them on a long walk – just a five or ten minute one around the block should be enough. This then gives them the chance to do their business and get some fresh air. All of that fresh air could do them the world of good!
Take Them To The Vet
If your dog doesn’t start to show any signs of improvement after a couple of days, it could be time to take them to the vet. Most of the time, your dog should get over any common ailment after just a few days, but if they don’t you will need to seek professional help. There could be something serious that is affecting them and it might require treatment straight away. The vet will be able to get to the bottom of your pup’s illnesses and prescribe all of the required medication that they will need to get back up on their feet in no time at all!
Give Them Plenty Of Attention
Most people love any attention that they can get when they are ill. Sympathy is always welcome! This is exactly the case with dogs as well and they will want to be mollycoddled by you as much as possible. So, be sure to talk to them lots and give them loads of strokes and pats.
