I’ve often heard the advice write what you know so I’ve decided to turn what I know about the Garden Route into a blog series. I will cover and focus on places in my area that are fun spots to visit. Most will be budget and family friendly. So kicking this off with a fun Saturday morning outing is the Outeniqua Family Market.
The Outeniqua Family Market
The Outeniqua family market is a farmers style market. With more than 150 food and craft stalls they are packed with amazingly locally grown fresh foods, homemade treats and fantastic handmade items. It is located in George across from the Garden Route mall and is open from 8am -2pm every Saturday. Entrance and WiFi is free.
They also offer live entertainment, lots of undercover seating, excellent ablution facilities and tons of secure parking. There is also a fairly spacious play area for the kids located next to a cupcake house!
Pet Friendly!
When they say it’s a family market they truly mean it. Your furry family members are also more than welcome. They provide poop bags for the number two’s and there is a water bowl located at each tap.
What’s at the market?
I’m going to give you a quick rundown of what you are able to find at this market! As you walk in the first area is mostly filled with food stalls. Churros, homemade cakes, hamburgers and all sorts of pies and pastries all around. There are even melkkos jaffels. You will also find organic and free range food items like locally grown fruits and veggies as well as eggs. This area is where the under roof seating is so everyone can choose their favourites to eat and have a lovely meal together.
We spent a winter’s morning here so the coffee stall was a hot favourite!
When you moved through the food area you will spot a nursery with really well priced plants and seedlings and if gardening is your thing, they have worm juice for sale.
Last but not least if you are looking for some bits and bobs there are crafts and african crafts available. Paintings, clothing, jewellery and the cutest handmade wooden toys. I spotted some amazing leather items too, including dainty shoes.
