On the 20th of February we took a family trip to the picturesque little town in the Karoo called Nieu Bethesda. It’s a good 4 plus hour dive from Wilderness and we tried to leave super early, without success I might add! Traveling with your grandmother that is a month away from turning 89 is no child’s play. We packed a good old fashioned “padkos” basket and had breakfast just after Union dale. We took a peep at the Wonderboom as well.
I prepared some mini quiche Lorraine, my mother and I made a meat loaf, Tamryn baked us some cheese puffs, we had all the other regulars like yogurt and biltong. We found a nice little spot road side and relaxed while eating and chatting. We continued on the trip driving through the beautiful Karoo and made a quick stop in Graaff Reinette to purchase some Karoo mutton. Our journey ended on the wrong side of midday, but with us all in great spirits.
For dinner my brother prepared a lovely Karoo mutton potjie for us. Everyone took the rest of the afternoon to relax a bit, reading and lazing around, watching a beautiful sunset. We ended the evening off with some star gazing.
The next morning we got up bright and early for some exploring to find some horses roaming the garden, we forgot to close the gate! We visited The Owl House where we tried to take in the world of Miss Helen, she spent 20 odd years transforming her house and garden into her own little world of colour using cement and pieces of glass. It was quite a sight to see! Afterwards we went to The brewery and Two Goats Deli where we had a delicious goats cheese platter and some craft beer, ciders and homemade apple juice, oh and don’t forget the Karoo coffee.
On the side we had another adventure trying to locate treasures using Geocashing, and we are proud to announce that we found three! If you are not familiar with the app, do yourself a favour and check it out, especially if you like traveling.
We made our last stop on the way back to Wilderness and drove out to the Valley of Desolation. Nature can be so incredibly beautiful!
All and all it was a really good trip! Have you ever been to Nieu Bethesda ?
