No Poo ? Excuse me ? Come again….. I’ve been noticing this No Poo thing going around on facebook and I thought it’s time I investigated a little bit, the only thing I could tell off hand is that it has something to do with your hair and shampoo or rather no shampoo.
The “No Poo” movement encourages us to wash our hair with more gentle alternatives to shampoo such as baking soda and apple cider vinegar. In short, instead of allowing chemicals in shampoo to strip our hair, we should strip away the chemicals instead and stop using shampoo altogether. I am guilty of washing my hair daily, I did however start a change to try and wash my hair less often but I am super scared of the transition phase and whether I’m ready to quit my biggest beauty addiction all together is another question. If you have any hints and tips on how to break the hair washing cycle, please share!
Here is how they suggest you cleanse your hair if you are ready to chuck your favourite shampoo out of the nearest bathroom window.
Baking Soda – This method is used for oil buildup and is perfect for oily hair.
Dissolve one tablespoonful of baking soda in a cup of water until you don’t see anymore residue. Apply this mixture to your hair and wash your hair as you would when using a regular shampoo, just remember that there will be no foam, as soon as your hair feels smooth you can rinse it out. Because your scalp naturally produces oil there should be no need for conditioning but if you notice your hair feeling really dry you can apply a moisturizer.
Apple Cider Vinegar – This method is used for dry hair and scalps.
After using the baking soda method for a while you may find your hair getting dry, or you might start off with dry hair, Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural softener, so after using the baking soda method you can make a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water, rinse your hair with it and then follow up with another rinse of clean water. Many people use vinegar as well as an alternative to fabric softer as well.
It is said that both these methods are excellent for getting dandruff under control including some other home remedies like fenugreek seeds, Indian lilac, coconut oil, white vinegar, olive oil, tea tree oil, lemon juice, and crushed aspirin.
I haven’t tried this before but if you’ve tried “No Poo” please leave me a comment on your experience.
