Ever since I stopped studying I don’t really frequent bars anymore. I find them loud, full of younlings and they tend to make my hair smell like smoke (not a pretty sight or shall I say smell) On Tuesday I got on the bar wagon and visited Churchills with Ilona from Ilonique. This was my first time ever at an upmarket bar and it totally changed my perspective. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so “grown up” on a girls night out.
Churchills Upmarket Bar & Lounge
Bringing the ambiance and vibe of an upmarket British bar, Churchills promises to be a place for all people to feel welcome. With its stylized British decor, and commitment to quality food and service, Churchills will attract the trend setters and on-the-rise go-getters of Johannesburg’s thriving upmarket scene.
With an array of the finest cigars, one of the largest selections of single Malts, Premium Whisky’s and Champagnes, connoisseurs will not be left disappointed.
A Night At Churchills
Upon arrival we were greeted really friendly on the red carpet. I felt a bit like I was crashing a movie star party as the host checked for our names on the list. We were escorted inside where our reserved table was waiting for us ready with a bottle of MCC. A half a glass in I realized that I put my cardigan on upside down (yes upside down) at home. Oops! Our server was professional and really friendly. He kept our glasses filled and our table tidy.
I really liked the British decor and the hat tip to Winston Churchill. We sat in a booth and the couch was comfortable. I have really short legs so sometimes my feet can’t touch the ground and I end up with pins and needles in my legs and toes. Yes short girl problems. This didn’t happen so thumbs up for the comfortable seating.
Drinks
We were served a chilled bottle of Graham Beck Brut MCC. What is MCC you ask? Let’s find out. Méthode Cap Classique is the South African version of champagne. MCC is made using the original, bottle fermented process used by the French. This is about as close as the South African wine industry will get to making champagne, every step of the process aside from the grapes, is the real deal. Champagne can only be made using grapes grown in Champagne, a north-eastern province of France.
The Graham Beck Brut was a bit on the dry side, I do prefer my wines a little bit more on the sweet side but once I got used to the taste it wasn’t actually not half bad. As all bubbly wines it went straight to my head!
Other drinks on their menu includes a selection of Whisky (some as old as the mountains) Bourbon, Gin, Champagne, Cognac, Vodka, Rum and Tequila. There are some yummy sounding cocktails too and not forgetting wine, beers and droughts. You can view the entire drinks menu over here.
Food
We decided on trying the William’s Selection platter, everything on there was delicious. The food was well prepared and seasoned great. The William’s Selection included Grilled Beef Short Rib, Grilled Sausage, Fish Cakes, Arancini Rice Balls and a selection of sauces. You can view the entire food menu over here. The Fish Cakes and Arancini Rice Balls were definitely my favourite.
Cigars
What would an upmarket bar be without a cigar menu? I don’t smoke so I didn’t sample any of these but you can take a look at the cigar menu over here.
Open Times & Location
Churchills is open daily from 3 pm till late except on Monday’s. You can find them at Shop 52 upper level, Galleria Piazza, Melrose Arch. Once again, I really enjoyed the evening out and there are SO many of the food goodies on their menu that I’d love to try!
