Living in the Garden Route – My Wilderness

my wilderness

Happy Monday lovelies. I apologize for the lack of posts the last couple of weeks. My life is still upside down (if you missed my previous post you can read it here) I’m currently staying with at my brother’s till my flight on the 5th of August and the lack of having a little space with my things doesn’t help the writing muse visit. Today I’m going to share you some of my favourite things about Wilderness, the place I called home for nearly three years.

My Wilderness

As the time creeps closer for my flight to Johannesburg I’ve been what I’m going to miss about Wilderness. In the past three years and I’ve grown pretty fond of the town and the people so I thought I will share my favourite spots.

Wilderness is a town in South Africa’s Western Cape Province, on a coastal stretch known as the Garden Route. It’s home to wide white beaches and trails. The Map of Africa, a hilltop lookout point, has views of the Indian Ocean, the Outeniqua Mountains and the Kaaimans River. Nearby Wilderness Natural Park, part of the sprawling Garden Route National Park, is a habitat for wildlife including leopards, monkeys, baboons and eagles.

Kaaimans River

This is one of my favourite places to go for a walk. It’s a bit of a drive to get there and it can get chilly at times but there is so much space for the dogs to run and swim. I’ve even been canoeing there before to the waterfall and it was totally worth it. Renting the Kaaimans Kaya is totally worth the view as well.

The Map of Africa Viewpoint

This stunning view of the Kaaimans river bending around a piece of land shaped like Africa is a must see and not much out of the way when passing through Wilderness. Opposite this gorgeous view point you can see a magnificent view of the entire town as far as the eye can see. This is also a popular point for para-gliders during the warmer months.

Leentjies Klip & Wilderness Beach

Another favourite place for a walk. The white beach stretches for miles and you can actually go for a pretty far walk. Unfortunately they zoned most of the beach recently as no go for dogs (small parts you can walk them there but only leashed) so this is best for fishing or romantic strolls. The sunset over the ocean is absolutely breathtaking.

Eateries

Wilderness is proudly chain restaurant free. There are so many different cuisines and restaurant vibes to choose from but I am going to share with you my favourite three.

Cocomo Restaurant: If you are a music lover you will really enjoy an evening out at this spot. They have music 7 days a week. The cocktail menu is pretty impressive and their pizzas are delicious! I don’t recommend going here in the evening when you want to catch up with a friend if you want to sit in the courtyard as it gets pretty loud. The front outside tables are perfect for conversation in summer. Best of both worlds. You can read some posts about Cocomo here and here.

Flava Cafe: This cafe style restaurant has some really unique dishes on their menu. Bobotie Spring Rolls being one of my favourites! Their burgers are delish and they have some pretty nice dessert choices.

Royal Siam Thai Restaurant: If you are in the mood for Asian cusine I highly recommend this place. I haven’t tried anything on their menu I did not like and their sushi is amazing. We won’t even talk about their deep fried sushi, need I say more?

I am pretty sad about leaving but I am also ready for a new journey in my life and when life gives you an opportunity you make the best of it.

What is your favourite things about where you live?

  1. Beautiful pictures. The place is enigmatic. I wish I could just pack my bag and go on a vacation.
