There are many recipes online for mug cakes but I’ve always been skeptical about making one, even tho some of them looked so delicious. In my book things need to be warmed up in a microwave and it’s used to pop popcorn, not to cook and bake in. Something about those wavy things going on inside a microwaves just scare me a bit. I’m a traditional oven and stove top home cook and damn proud of it! Mug Cake with a Dutch twist.
But getting back to the mug cake, my hubby came across a video on facebook about how easy it is to make one and he has been craving cake for a couple of days so I told him to go try it out. I read the recipe to him and together we altered it a bit and wow, was I surprised, it actually turned out to be delicious! So here it is, our mug cake recipe:
Mug Cake with a Dutch twist
Ingredients:
- 4 Tablespoons Self Raising Flour
- 4 Tablespoons White Sugar
- 1 Tablespoon Cacao Powder
- 3 Tablespoons Butter
- 3 Tablespoons Milk
- 3 Tablespoons Speculoos – This is a spread much like peanut butter from the Netherlands, you might find this at a Dutch store but if not, just use peanut butter, I know we will when we run out of Speculoos
- 1 Egg
Method:
Take the largest mug you own, a soup mug is even better, add the butter and pop it in the microwave and melt, mix in all the rest of the ingredients using a fork. Place your mug in the microwave and microwave your cake for 1 1/2 – 3 minutes on high, it all depends on how powerful your microwave is. You should end up with a yummy looking cake. Enjoy it just like that or with some caramel treat, ice cream or even some custard.

Dear Beautiful Lizna, This looks so yummy! One day i might try it, but i too am skeptical about microwave baking! I am also a stove top and oven kind of girl, but baking in the microwave is alot faster i think so. 🙂 PS. your blog is lovely.
The mug cake is really good despite it coming out of the microwave oven 🙂 and thank you for the compliment xx
What a yummy twist! I make these without the speculoos, but I think I’m going to have to hunt some down. I normally make a hole in the middle and pour in some cream and chocolate sauce while it’s still hot and it makes a yummy, gooey (diet-friendly!) cake. Mmmm I just might have to make one tonight with peanut butter to try!
Ohh I should tell hubby to do the center thing, he’d love it and lol at diet friendly cake, the speculoos tastes kinda like the dutch speculaas cookies
This is definitely something I need to try – looks really yummy!
