Chocolate cheat cake is the ultimate shortcut dessert — rich, indulgent, and secretly one of the easiest cakes you’ll ever make.
If you’ve seen my Nettari post, you’ll know that more foodie content has been on the way. And this is officially the first one, featuring some of the delicious syrups from Nettari. You can explore more of my recipes and content over on lizna.co.za.
This chocolate cheat cake is exactly what it sounds like… a little shortcut, a little secret, and a whole lot of flavour.
Why It’s Called a Cheat Cake
Let’s clear something up — I’m not calling this a cheat cake because you’re cheating on your diet (although… no judgement if you are 😄).
This is a cheat cake because it’s incredibly easy to make. The kind of cake you whip up without turning your kitchen into a disaster zone.
And the secret?
A box cake mix.
Sjjjjt… we don’t talk about it. We just enjoy the compliments.
Why You’ll Love This Chocolate Cheat Cake
- Quick and easy — minimal prep and cleanup
- Rich chocolate flavour with a hazelnut twist
- Perfect for last-minute desserts or entertaining
- Customisable with your favourite toppings
This chocolate cheat cake is proof that you don’t need complicated recipes to make something that tastes amazing.
Let’s Make It
Start by preparing your chocolate cake mix according to the instructions on the box. I like using a single pan for simplicity, but you can divide it if you prefer layers.
Once your cake is baked and completely cooled, it’s time for the real magic — the mascarpone hazelnut frosting.
In a mixing bowl, combine the mascarpone with the frosting packet from the cake mix. Add the Nettari hazelnut syrup and mix until smooth, creamy, and just a little bit irresistible.
Slice your cake into two layers, sandwich them together with a generous layer of frosting, and then cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting.
Finish it off with grated hazelnut chocolate for that extra indulgent touch.

The Final Result
You get a soft, rich chocolate cheat cake with a creamy, nutty frosting that tastes like you spent way more time on it than you actually did.
It’s simple, it’s delicious, and it’s one of those recipes you’ll keep coming back to when you need something quick but impressive.
