Ever since I saw the viral video of the sea turtle with a straw in his little nose, using straws has been haunting me. But I couldn’t just give up my straws. I have serious paranoia about drinking from a can! When I was 17 I contracted the hepatitis A virus from a contaminated can. Since then I just can’t drink from them without using a straw. Have you ever thought about how many hands handle a single can before you put it to your mouth? It completely freaks me out.
What about the straws
Something still had to be done about my straw usage. But what?! This is when re-usable straws started appearing all over social media. I knew I had to get my hands on some. I first looked at the metal straws but I was scared that they will change the taste of whatever I was drinking. Paper straws are still only single use, even tho they are better to use. Bamboo straws were just the perfect solution.
Scouring the internet for bamboo straw stockists only produced two. I compared them and I set my heart on The Bamboo Project as you don’t only get a single straw but a whole kit with a straw cleaner and a bag. I thought to wait till after I’m done moving before placing an order and that is when my luck struck and I won a whole bunch of straws from The Bamboo Project and It’s a Mom’s Life!
About The Bamboo Project
The Bamboo Project aims to use the powerful bamboo plant to change the mindset around single-use plastic products, namely plastic straws. In our everyday lives we reuse; knives, forks, spoons, plates and cups. So why not reuse straws?
The Bamboo Project offers sustainable non-plastic alternatives to single-use plastic items currently used in South Africa and the world. They hope to change mindsets around plastic consumption and to eventually be in a position to donate a portion of their revenue to environmental protection agencies.
Why Bamboo
- Bamboo is said to be the fastest growing plant on the planet. In the right conditions it can grow up to 1 meter in a single day and reaches maturity in only 3 to 5 years.
- The Bamboo plant also releases 30% more oxygen and absorbs more carbon dioxide than other plants.
- Bamboo is lightweight, durable, extremely strong and of course biodegradable.
- Bamboo straws are therefore the perfect natural alternative to conventional single-use plastic straws. Each straw when cared for properly can be used over and over again.
Using The Bamboo Straw
These straws at the perfect length to enjoy your beverages out of most containers and glasses. they also easily fit into take away cups (these should also go tho) cans and bottles. You do taste the bamboo the tiniest bit but it didn’t bother me and I still enjoyed my drink. The easy to use cleaner also perfectly fits into the straw for a quick scrub. I do however think that I won’t attempt drinking a milk based beverage with these but we will see because I do love myself a good milkshake!
Making The Change
These bamboo straws are priced from R175, this includes two straws, a cleaner and a handy pouch to keep your straws in. They also cater for bulk orders that can be branded for your business. I find the pouch super handy for my handbag so I am straw ready whenever I’m thirsty. I was so chuffed with myself when I could decline plastic straws over the weekend and whip my own straws out of my bag. So, what are you waiting for?! Show me your straw!

This is such a cool concept considering the bans that are now taking place in the UK with single-use plastic straws. There are a lot of places now introducing paper straws but I definitely think these bamboo ones are a great alternative. You just wash them like any normal kitchen appliances don’t you?

Hi Charlotte! Yes you just wash them in some soapy water. Mine came with a little cleaner that’s environmentally friendly too to scrub it on the inside
Wow! I never even heard of Bamboo straws. We use re-usable straws all the time!
Which kind do you use?
These look so cool, so glad you won this!
