So I’ve always wanted to try poached pears, they always make them look like such an amazing treat on TV cooking programs so when I spotted red skinned pears at our local fruits and vegetable store I couldn’t let the opportunity slide by. I picked up 5 yummy looking pears and went on a search for a recipe.
No recipes I looked at suited what I was after so ended up just using one as a guideline but I pretty much ended up doing my own thing, and guess what, the pears came out tasting just delicious so I thought I’d share my recipe with you!
Poached Pears with Strawberry Sauce
Ingredients:
- 5 Pears
- 125ml Castor Sugar
- 125ml White Sugar
- 1tsp Vanilla Essence or a couple of drops of Vanilla Extract
- 2 cups of Frozen Strawberries
- 4 cups of Cold Water
Method
Peel and remove the cores from the pears. Combine the sugar, water and vanilla in a saucepan and turn the heat on medium, keep stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Add the strawberries and pears. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes, turn after 15 minutes. The pears should be tender when a knife is inserted. Let the pears stand in the syrup for about 10 minutes and then remove them. Boil down the syrup in the saucepan till it starts to get a little bit thicker, let it cool a bit and blend it with a hand-blender. Place one pear into a serving bowl and pour strawberry sauce over, serve with some ice cream or cream!
Next time I’d love replacing the white sugar with brown sugar and try these with mascarpone.

This is such a simple recipe. I’ve always wanted to try a poached pear salad. Maybe I can start off with this and build up the courage to order it. Thanks for sharing, xx
